Chateau Charmail

The 2005 offering from Chateau Charmail is what you look for in a Haut-Medoc wine.  Although it’s 45% merlot and 35% cabernet sauvignon, the cabernet overpowers the merlot to give a rich and strong flavor to the wine.  Tastes of creme de cassis and licorice permeate the wine.  The primary flavor that comes through, though, is the terroir of the vineyard.  We love the earthy taste that separates Bordeaux wines from those of the rest of the world.  For the price, we think this wine is a fabulous find.  The 2005 is perhaps a little young to be drinking yet, but it’s close.  It’s clearly a wine that will get better with age. **** We opened another bottle of this one recently.  Still fantastic.  Still too young, though.  We’re looking forward to enjoying it in 2012 or so.

[…] Well, our experience so far with the 2005 vintage has been mixed.  We are pleased, however, with the 2005 Chateau Charmail from Haut-Medoc.  It has a full body, with plenty of flavor.  You can taste the Bordeaux soil, which makes this wine better than average.  You can also taste hints of creme de cassis and licorice.  The color is great as well.  This is a wine that is drinkable now (2008), but will only get better with age.  It bodes well for the vintage.  We will keep you updated as we try other Chateaux.
